The first generation of this new car is fitted with electric motors on both axles that produce 201 horsepower and the option for either the 1.6L GDI or 2.0L T-GDI turbocharged engine under the hood delivering 184hp and 269 lb/ft torque respectively.

The electric motor starts with 1.56kWh of available battery power and will add up to 9 miles on the highway when the gas engine isn’t used. The Kona also features an 8-speed automatic transmission for both engines.

Hyundai has teamed up with other suppliers to deliver this full package, including to former Formula One team Brawn, to design the suspension and dampers.

BTRL (Brawn) worked with Hyundai on the chassis development, including brake cooling strategies for both axles, the wider track front and rear axle module design and geometry as well as approach and departure angles achieved by an elevated overall vehicle height.
